چکیده
In December 2001 and 2002 in situ aerosol measurements were made from balloon-borne platforms within polar stratospheric clouds (PSC) which contained particles of supercooled ternary solution (STS), nitric acid trihydrate (NAT) and ice. Particle size (radius >0.15 µm) and number concentrations were measured with two optical particle counters. One of these included an ∼80 cm inlet heated to >244 K to evaporate the PSC particles and thus to obtain measurements, within PSCs, of the size distribution of the particles upon which the PSCs condensed. These measurements are compared to models, described here, that calculate the evaporation of PSC particles at ∼250 K and ∼290 K for an inlet transition time of about 0.1 s. The modeled evaporation for STS agrees well with the measurements. For NAT the modeled evaporation is less than the evaporation measured. The primary uncertainty concerns the phase and morphology of NAT particles as they are brought to temperatures >50 K above equilibrium temperatures for NAT at strato-spheric partial pressures. The slow evaporation of NAT in heated inlets could be used to identify a small NAT component within a mixed phase PSC dominated by STS.

متن کاملA condensed-mass advection based model for the simulation of liquid polar stratospheric clouds
We present a condensed-mass advection based model (MADVEC) designed to simulate the condensation/evaporation of liquid polar stratospheric cloud (PSC) particles. A (Eulerian-in-radius) discretization scheme is used, making the model suitable for use in global or mesoscale chemistry and transport models (CTMs). The mass advection equations are solved using an adaption of the weighted average flu...
متن کاملLiquid particle composition and heterogeneous reactions in a mountain wave Polar Stratospheric Cloud
Mountain wave polar stratospheric clouds (PSCs) were detected on 8 February 2003 above the Scandinavian Mountains by in-situ instruments onboard the M55 Geophysica aircraft. PSC particle composition, backscatter and chlorine activation for this case are studied with a recently developed non-equilibrium microphysical box model for liquid aerosol. Results from the microphysical model, run on quas...
متن کاملSensitivity of the Mipas on Envisat to the Detection of Polar Stratospheric Clouds and Their Composition
The MIPAS instrument has provided unprecedented information on the distribution and composition of polar stratospheric clouds. Both the spectral information in the measured data and its views of the poles are central to these advances. In this paper, the detection of polar stratospheric cloud particles is discussed and a threshold value of five for a defined MIPAS cloud index is shown to be sui...
متن کاملQuasi-Lagrangian Measurements of Nitric Acid Trihydrate Formation Over Antarctica
In 2010, the joint French-United States Concordiasi project released 19 long-duration superpressure balloons from McMurdo Station, Antarctica. Four of these balloons carried a gondola with particle counters and temperature sensors to measure polar stratospheric clouds. One gondola spent 5 days at stable temperatures between equilibrium temperatures for nitric acid trihydrate (NAT) and for super...
